Clarity Comes From Getting Closer to the Problem

Nature (and particularly the sea) has been a brilliant mentor for me over the years in how to approach work challenges. This year, I will try to share regularly (ish!) reflections on how moments in nature connect to the realities of organisational change, based on images I take.

This image, taken a few weeks ago is the first.

On a windy and wintery day in the Med (ignore the blue sky!), the waves look far safer viewed from the comforts of the car’s windscreen. From a distance it was chaos, mess, and very, very tempting to stay out of. Work challenges sometimes feels exactly the same. Best avoided, too difficult to solve, always best to stay dry!

But when you actually step in — when you get close to the problem instead of simply seeing it from behind a screen — everything looks different. Patterns appear. Ideas surface. Real relationships strengthen. Solutions you couldn’t see from the comforts of a keyboard at home, begin to form.

So maybe that challenge we can’t stop thinking about is better understood by getting close to it. By talking to people in real life. By spending time with the data — where it comes from, what it represents — not just what an algorithm tells us. The clarity we’re looking for often lives inside that slightly messy, very human space.
