Change lessons from adventure photography 1 – Wave chasing, November 2025, Limassol
This photo of (another!) wave, one of my favourites, was taken during Storm Byron in Cyprus last week. High winds, rough seas, difficult conditions. Getting into the water to take it was not the obvious choice.
But risk management isn’t about automatic avoidance. It should be about evidence and judgement. The conditions were analysed. Mitigations in place. Boundaries set. The decision wasn’t to ignore risk, but to understand it well enough to act in a safe, effective way.
That tension will feel familiar to anyone working in organisational change.
Risk is essential — but when it becomes the default reason to stop, progress stalls. While doing nothing can feel safer, it can become the very reason for ongoing change failure.
In practice, risk works best when it guides action rather than quietly blocking it
